Is wise to change 7-Zip (that's what I do) to default to .zip, so those receiving the archives don't have problems or are required additional installs.

In my experience people do not react well to LibreOffice, after so many years it is still slow to start. And not perfectly compatible with MS Office. And you have to change the defaults to MS file formats.

People I know would not use Y!M transport over Jabber servers for its lack of features: photo sharing, file transfers, voice/video/webcam and even "audibles".nicuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11787116898361050437noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5797212.post-75284498385247231762012-03-26T19:43:51.974+03:002012-03-26T19:43:51.974+03:00I do exactly the same, this and LibreOffice are pr...I do exactly the same, this and LibreOffice are probably the first programs I install when I am asked to help someone else with their computer.

Along with being free, 7-Zip is one of the best archivers today (see http://warp.povusers.org/ArchiverComparison/ for example -- yes, it's better and faster than RAR)
Fortunately most of those who sell compression software choose to release the source for the unpackers because it's in their best interest to do so, and the 7-Zip file manager (7zFM) can unpack RAR archives and many other formats too. It's also available in many languages, including Romanian, like any good piece of free software :)

(Since you mentioned web interfaces, I mostly agree with what you said, I would only add that a good web interface should allow you to upload multiple files at once, but this requires cooperation from the web browser running on user's machine... and that's another story)

With regard to IM, maybe people should know that you can also use your MSN/Yahoo/AIM/ICQ right from your Jabber account on most open Jabber servers (not sure about GTalk and Facebook, that's probably a matter of politics)rzhttp://r2dev.ro/~rz/noreply@blogger.com
