Fedora Weekly Webcomic: A Pony for Me

A flamerwar about why Fedora sucks and what should be done to stop that is a recurring event and usually the subject is multimedia support.
Well, as the problem with multimedia is smaller and smaller (do you saw the new capabilities built into PackageKit?), the latest flamewar (still ongoing) is about "Long Term Support" and I believe it is a kind of record, my fingers are tired of deleting unread threads...

  1. Hahahaha.

Yeah, it's still funny to me that people use Fedora on Production servers anyway. Especially people like GoDaddy. I understand people that don't need paid support, but CentOS is a great solution in that case.

If I were wikipedia however, ponying up for RHEL would be the wisest decision.

I don't think the change will hurt Fedora though. Fedora is more geared toward non-production servers and desktops/laptops right now anyway.

  2. Hi,

While it's not the end of the world, I do believe Ubuntu has a very important moral advantage over Fedora/RHEL, and you can see it in the very first Ubuntu promise:

Ubuntu will always be free of charge, including enterprise releases and security updates.

This convinced me to switch to Ubuntu, and, unlike Fedora/RHEL, I don't feel like a lab rat for their software.

I really can not say the same about RedHat and their business model. (Novell for that matter it's in the same clique)

  3. The irony bm is that without companies like Redhat and Novell trying to sell their products and hiring people to work on GNU/Linux distributions like Ubuntu wouldn't be where they are today. By the way a moral advantage of Ubuntu? I'm surprised you'd talk like that seeing that Ubuntu is just a leach on Debian.

  4. This is true in the same sense that without Microsoft, the software industry weren't be where it is today.

I have an enormous respect for Debian. The difference between Debian/Ubuntu and Fedora/RedHat examples, and hence Ubuntu's moral advantage, is that the derivative work named Ubuntu is free, unlike RHEL for example. (All the best wishes to CentOS team)

Ubuntu is also trying to sell its products, and they are also hiring. Notice that I'm not blaming RedHat/Novell because they want to sell their products (nor Microsoft for that matter), but I strongly dislike the way they're doing it.

I am sure your intention was to say "gratis" here. And note that in the RHEL case, you don't pay for the bits, but for a large package containing support (yes, Red Hat won't give you the complied bits without support, but they give the source, so you have the bits from CentOS).

This is an interesting philosophical discussion... industry weren't be here today, but in a different place, maybe a better one? Like in Asimov's "Foundation" some things happen because the society is ready and needs them. So without Microsoft, someone else has fulfilled that role... maybe in a worse or better way.

Canonical do not fix bugs on their releases. At all.

They patch security vulnerabilities, and that's it. So if dovecot has a bug that is hitting you and upstream fixed it with a two line patch months ago, you are screwed.

    Enjoy :)

    Stop spreading FUD around.

I have two farms of servers, one RHEL, one Ubuntu.

Red Hat fix non-security bugs, Ubuntu never do.

    Not true.

Surprisingly, I am writing from an Ubuntu box... and guess what? They do updates beside security fixes.

If you have a specific bug that you think it's not fixed and it should, you should file it in launchpad, or ask on forums at: http://ubuntuforums.org/ for a workaround.
